Jason Portnof, DMD, MD**
Dr. Jason E. Portnof is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), the American College of Dentists (FACD) and the International College of Dentists (FICD). His interests include the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery with an emphasis on the correction of dentofacial deformities, orthognathic surgery (corrective jaw surgery), maxillofacial reconstructive surgery, corrective jaw surgery (for TMJ), oral and maxillofacial pathology, and complex dental implantology.
Dr. Portnof graduated with honors from the Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine in Ft. Lauderdale. He also earned an MD from Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City, where he was trained in oral and maxillofacial surgery. He received fellowship training in pediatric maxillofacial surgery/craniomaxillofacial surgery at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.
Dr. Portnof is the 2021 Chair of the AAOMS Committee on Cleft, Craniofacial and Pediatric Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (CCCPOMS). He is the pediatric consultant to the AAOMS Committee on Anesthesia (CAN). He serves on the Board of Directors of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology. Dr. Portnof is a board examiner for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS). He has served as past president of the Florida Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association (FCPA) and is the current president elect of the Florida Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons (FSOMS).
Dr. Portnof has authored multiple peer-reviewed articles and presented both nationally and internationally. Also, he has held numerous teaching positions at prestigious universities including Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Weill Cornell Medical College, Florida Atlantic University, and his alma mater, Nova Southeastern University.

Course Overview
This continuing education program outlines opioid prescribing principles for general dentists and dental specialists with emphasis on the safe and competent use of opioids for managing acute moderate to severe dental pain. The course provides most current information on minimizing opioid abuse through patient education, careful patient assessment and screen patients for substance use disorders when indicated, and using tools such as prescription monitoring programs.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this continuing education activity, the participant will be able to:
- Describe the origins and scope of the current opioid crisis in the United States
- Identify current trends in opioid prescribing in the dental profession
- Identify the various types of opioid medications and their mechanisms of action
- Describe how opioids affect the body and the brain
- Describe the most common pain medications used in dentistry
- Distinguish between opioid tolerance, dependence, and addiction
- Describe the symptoms of opioid withdrawal
- Distinguish between opioid agonists, agonist-antagonists, and antagonists
- Identify the most common sources of opioid misuse and diversion.
- Describe steps that dentists can take to ensure the safe handling, storage, and prescription of opioid medications
- Describe the importance of screening for substance disorders in dental practice
- Describe the function and impact of prescription drug monitoring programs in curbing opioid misuse and diversion
- Outline the American Dental Association’s stance on the use of opioids in the treatment of dental pain
