Dr. Peter Vitruk
Laser Surgery: Myths and Physics of Soft Tissue Lasers
Dr. Peter Vitruk earned his Ph.D. degree in Physics from the Moscow Physics and Technology Institute in the late 1980s in the former USSR. In the 1990s he held Research Scientist position with The Academy of Sciences in the former USSR and then a Royal Society Visiting Research Fellow position at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland. He later worked as Senior Scientist with Synrad Inc. in Seattle, WA, and then as Chief Scientist with Luxar-Lumenis also in Seattle, WA. In 2002 He co-founded the LuxarCare-AescuLight-LightScalpel group of companies – the only American-based designer and manufacturer of flexible fiber surgical CO2 lasers for small office out-patient applications. Dr. Vitruk has authored 10 patents and over 20 articles on CO2 lasers and is a Member of The Institute of Physics, UK. In 2017 he founded the American Laser Study Club, an educational platform that helps physicians, dentists, veterinarians, and practice staff members to excel at the efficient and safe application of laser energy in everyday practice.

Course objectives:
Orofacial myofunctional therapy has been in the literature for over a century! Orofacial myofunctional disorders can impact function over a patient’s lifetime. Structure and function go hand in hand. Gain a full understanding of who and when to refer. Learn how to approach patients who present with OMDs through a collaborative approach.
Tethered oral tissues (TOTs) is a hot topic. With the increase in research and specialized providers treating TOTs, awareness has grown on the topic of TOTs, thus more diagnoses being made over the years. Research has shown a link between sleep-disordered breathing (especially sleep apnea) and a short lingual frenum. There are three forms of TOTs: lingual, labial, and buccal. A functional assessment is critical in properly diagnosing tethered oral tissue. Participants will understand how TOTs can impact speech, feeding/eating, breathing, sleep, and craniofacial development. Participants will also learn the importance of pre and post-surgical orofacial myofunctional therapy.

3. Introduction to treating infants, children, and adults with soft tissue lasers
4. Understand the team approach and benefits of treating TOTs

1. Brief history of Orofacial myofunctional therapy
2. Understand OMDs and how they impact function over a lifetime.
3. Define tethered oral tissues and identify the three forms.
4. Understand functional impacts of tethered oral tissues.
5. Understand the importance of collaborative care.
6. Understand the importance of pre and post-surgical orofacial myofunctional therapy.
